Certainly we can't control people's thinking. Focusing our attention on doing the best we can and making sound decisions will keep us positive and productive. Is there something you're worrying about that you can't control or that you'd like to let go of? Be grateful for the things or people in your life that bring you pleasure or joy. It can be something as simple as a hot shower, favorite bath robe, yummy food or the look on a loved one's face. Try this: every day before you go to sleep, write down at least three things that you are grateful for. It might be a challenge if you've never tried it. Do it every day for 7 days and notice the difference! Visualize a situation that will bring you the thing you desire. Having an idea of where we're going, a dream, gives us a sense of direction and purpose. Take a little quiet time and close your eyes and picture yourself at work 3 years from now in 2012. Picture yourself entering your place of work (even if it's at home). Look around. What's going on? Who's there? Treat yourself to thoughts about your ideal work situation. Make the picture somewhat specific. Yogi Berra says, "Be careful if you don't know where you're going. Otherwise you might not know if you get there." What's a situation you want to visualize? How do you feel when you think about it? Knowing where you're headed is both stabilizing and empowering. When we're working toward something we deeply desire, we can feel passionate about it and immerse ourselves in it. Take a little quiet time. Do this a few times and see if the vision changes. Picture yourself at work. Now. scan your body. How do you feel? Excited.. interested.. bored.. concerned.. burdened? It's your dream. What is most important to you? Who do you want to be? Make it what you want. A CEO whose company lost 40% of its revenue in one month last fall was coaching with Leadership Dynamics. He had visualized a worst case scenario to keep panic at bay. He consoled himself with a vision of being OK even if he had to declare business and personal bankruptcy. His description of how he would be 'OK' was so clear that his coach asked him to write it down and rip it up! Your vision needs to take you where you WANT to be instead of where you might end up. The CEO partnered with his coach to create a stronger vision and plan to keep him solvent and prospering. Now, a few months later, he has stabilized the company and is positioned for growth. What can you do to bring your vision closer? What will it feel like? What are you willing to do to make it a reality?
